February 2010
Digital illiteracy and the digital divide persist in Europe – the European Commission reports that “7% of the EU population has no computer skills whatsoever and more than 60% of people with a lower secondary education or less have no basic e-skills.” European Schoolnet has been relentlessly addressing this challenge over the past 13 years through a broad array of actions aimed at preparing Europe’s younger citizens to take an active role in today’s Information and Knowledge Society. These actions are supported by national education ministries in 31 countries in the EU and beyond, as well as by the European Commission, the Council of Europe and leading entities from industry.
On the occasion of the inauguration of the e-Skills week campaign and to celebrate the first highly successful meeting of the pan-European youth panel on online safety, European Schoolnet organised a breakfast press conference in Brussels on 9 December 2009. European Schoolnet shared its strategy to respond to the challenge, and provide details on some of its highly visible actions to be conducted in the coming months, including:
Achievements of Europe’s first online safety Youth Panel representing 26 countries and ensuring that the voice of youth is heard and heeded in EU safety programmes
Data Protection Day on 28 January 2010 – pan-European multimedia competition to raise young people’s attention to online privacy
e-Skills Week 2010, an initiative launched as part of the EU e-skills strategy by DG Enterprise and Industry, organised by Digitaleurope and European Schoolnet
