New Computer-based Practice tests by Cambridge ESOL

March 2010
As the number of queries received on Computer-based testing is on the increase on a day-to-day basis, Cambridge ESOL has developed some new, online practice tests on this very flexible format that will hopefully provide a clearer picture of the test’s appearance and functionality. Available through the Cambridge ESOL website, the tests can be found by following the link below: http://www.cambridgeesol.org/exams/exams-info/computer-based-practice.html
The computer-based test is another choice in how you take our exams — it does not replace the paper and pen test. Other than the method of completing them, the exams are exactly the same, and they both lead to the same internationally recognised Cambridge ESOL certificate. Extensive research and trials have been carried out to make sure this is the case.
Computer-based testing offers candidates:
•More dates: centres and schools can meet the needs of candidates for whom the existing dates are not convenient
•Flexibility: candidates can register for the exam as little as a week before taking it — allowing the exam to be taken when candidates are ready
•Choice: many students are more comfortable completing a test with a keyboard and mouse rather than paper and pen
•Faster access to results: many results are available online just three weeks after the test.
Additionally, candidates enjoy the user-friendly interface and being able to edit their answers on screen; many have said the online timer and help functions allow them to get the best from their exam performance and that being able to use headphones for the Listening section allows them to concentrate.
The practice tests in mention help candidates familiarise more with this version of the exam as they give a good representation of what the candidate experience will be like. The minimum technical requirements demanded for running the tests on any PC are mentioned in the page. Candidates can log on to the page so as to investigate this further themselves. This page can also be used as a reference tool for teachers, where to they can also redirect candidates that express interest in CB Testing so that they can have a first-hand experience of what the new format looks like.
