Work being carried out as part of the English Profile Programme is going to give teachers, learners, researchers, curriculum planners and other education professionals unprecedented insight into language learning at the highest levels.
The work of John Trim and his colleagues in the 80s and 90s gave the language learning community the hugely influential Threshold and Vantage volumes covering the levels A2, B1 and B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference. These have been a cornerstone of English teaching ever since they were published.
But until recently there has been nothing for the C levels –corresponding to the Cambridge English Advanced and Proficiency exams. A new book by Tony Green of the University of Bedfordshire’s Centre for Research in English Language Learning and Assessment is set to fill this gap.
Based on thorough review of the linguistic theories of communication and language learning Theoretical and Empirical Bases for Language Construct Definition Across the Ability Range, uses data from the vast Cambridge Learner’s Corpus to model what learners at these levels can actually do.
The work of Tony Green and is colleagues will bring practical benefits for everyone involved in the teaching and learning of English at an advanced level. The book will be published by CUP.
